Adium 1.1

The last release of Adium was about a month ago, so you might think that Adium 1.1 has been in development just that long. You might also think that ice cream is better without caramel. You’d be wrong on both counts. Adium 1.1 development started over a year ago, and the ducky fruits of that labor are now yours to enjoy :D

Adium 1.1, now available, includes one of the student projects from the Google Summer of Code 2006. That project — new, tastier tabs, using PSMTabBarControl — provides a number of benefits:

  • You can arrange your tabs on any side of the message view, not just the bottom. Tabs are arranged vertically when you put them on the left or right edge of the window and horizontally when you put them on the top or bottom.
  • Tabs handle overflow better by presenting a chevron (») menu, just like toolbars do.
  • Tabs are now spring-loaded, so that if you drag something to a tab that isn’t active, it will activate, so that you can position the thing you’re dragging precisely within the inputline.
  • You can have each tab display the number of unread messages, if any.
  • More! Play around and find out.

Adium 1.1 brings other fresh yum besides the new tabs:

  • Prettier
  • Faster
  • Changes in the contact list, such as people coming online and going offline, animate smoothly.
  • The contact list’s ability to hide like the Dock at the edge of the screen has been improved.
  • A new type of AdiumXtra, the menu bar icon xtra, has been created to let you customize the appearance of Adiumy in your menu bar; you can download AdiumMenuBarIcons packs from AdiumXtras.com.
  • Buzz on Yahoo! and nudge on MSN are now fully supported.
  • AIM DirectConnect should be more reliable and less memory intensive; it is now automatically initiated as needed.
  • You can now import accounts and chat transcripts from iChat.
  • Adium now warns you if you run Adium from the disk image. This will especially benefit new Mac users who aren’t accustomed to working with disk images.
  • Right-to-left text is handled property on MSN.

You can read the full, extensive, exhaustive, and complete list of changes on our version history page.

Be sure to see Contributing to Adium for how you can submit patches and code, help hunt down bugs, and otherwise contribute to development. If you don’t code and want to support the project, please consider donating!

Great work guys, and a very special thanks to the SOC student, who brought us the new tabs. They are awesome!

  2. Anonymous Says:

I can’t figure out how to arrange the tabs vertically

  3. Sejo Magno Says:

In Preferences >> General, there is a scroll list that says “Show tabs on the:” and you can choose top, bottom, left or right.

Thank you AdiumX Team! Love your application! Keeps getting better each time, what a nice suprise to see 1.1 updated today. Definately one of my favourite Mac applications!

  6. Anonymous Says:

To hide offline contacts simply go to View > Show Offline contacts (uncheck it).

  7. Adrian Says:

WOW, i looked EVERYWHERE in the preferences for the last 15 minutes to figure out how to hide the damn offline contacts and i decided to come here and see if other pple found a way..

hm..so i updated with the autimatic updater and after that my domo-kun icon from the extras was gone and also my adium doesnt start anymore. it jumps for a second or two and thats it. i have mac os 10.3.9 and i guess i had the latest adium german version without any other xtras. i know i shouldn’t report bugs in the comments but maybe somebody has a quick resolution for me. otherwise i will try out some things and submit a bug report if that doesnt help.

    thanks, tim

There are never real new features in new Adium releases, why?! Always just boring fixes and changes, never anything visible, new or interesting. Where is the support for audio/video, where is support for MSN emoticons (PC 2 Mac), faster file transfers to PC etc.

  10. Yvo Says:

I can’t wait until the SoC2007 XMPP changes are introduced.

  11. Charley Says:

Awesome job! I’ll be sure to donate.

  12. tom Says:

The tabs are really cool and die floating status-changes in the contact-list too

mr. anonymous (tim) with the “non-starting adium after automatic updating”: the system requirement for 1.1 is OS X 10.4.0 or greater.

my adium crashed once when using the Get Info feature … can’t reproduce it …

Adium is the coolest IM Client for mac os, allthough I miss some “tiny” features like editing my icq userdetails, or a visible/invisible list …

    regards
    tom

Adium supports (receipt of) custom emoticons using MSN; you just have to enable it in Preferences/Advanced/MSN. It works fine for my single MSN contact.

Adium 1.1 looks like a good evolution but, like another poster, i’m most excited about 1.2′s new XMPP stuff. With things like Ad-hoc commands coming i’m thinking of moving back to hosting my own XMPP server (Openfire FTW) instead of using Google Apps for Your Domain.

WRT audio and video, Adium now has a dedicated group of voice and video developers and i believe they’re making progress. The reason there’s not much public information on the A/V stuff is that i think the devs have decided to make it Leopard only and they’re still encumbered by Apple’s NDA so can’t yet make their code public*.

*disclaimer: I’ve garnered this information from reading the various mailing list posts and IRC meeting logs so it may not be accurate.

    gadu gadu don’t working:
    (Gadu-Gadu) : Error
    Connection failed.

  16. Anonymous Says:

Adium 1.1 does not run on OS X 10.3.9. You must use Adium 1.0.5

  17. Chris Says:

Thanks guys! Keep up the good work.

Hi. I realise this is a comment for the bug tracking people, but I don’t want to register with every website I come across. I started Adium this morning and an auto-update dialog popped up to ask if I wanted to upgrade. Seeing no reason not to, I went ahead and installed. Then, Adium didn’t work anymore. The problem turned out to be that my version of OS X is not sufficient to run the latest version. It seems to me that your auto-update feature ought to warn users that they may be about to mess up their system, causing several wasted hours of trying to find out what the problem is! Before anyone blows a raspberry at me, saying that I ought to have been able to quickly work out that this was the problem, bear in mind that the developers ought to have realised that you don’t just install stuff on a user’s machine without checking it’s compatible first. Grah! Please amend the auto-update message to reflect the compatibility issue so that other users aren’t caught out. Ah, I trusted you guys…

  19. Jake Says:

Why the dropped support for 10.3.9?

The automatic updater should check for os version, since I also had the problem of it updating automatically and no longer running (on 10.3.9).

  20. Anonymous Says:

Ahh – At least there is some helpful info here, after my auto update problems.

I too am in the 10.3.9 boat, and agree — why doesn’t the updater / installer check the OSX version?? Why upgrade my software, when it then ceases to work??

I love Adium! But please fix the installer and auto updater.

I imagine many are banging their heads against the desk this morning.

  21. neoneuromancer Says:

    Hey All,

Thank you for your hard work, this release is fantastic! I’m thrilled about the AdiumXtra Menu bar and I can’t wait for the next releases. You guys rock!

  22. Anonymous Says:

    I am banging my head !! I have 10.3.9 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont remember my passwords for my accounts, thanks for nothing !!!!!!

  23. Anonymous Says:

Passwords are stored in your Keychain. Use Keychain Access to view them.

  24. Anonymous Says:

Does this version do transparency properly when using Safari 3?

  25. Ryan Platte Says:

We had significant trouble with this release that was resolved by moving aside the preferences file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.adiumX.adiumX.plist

    Hope this helps someone.

  26. Todd Dailey Says:

    @ryan

I had a crash-on-launch and moving aside the plist fixed it. Thanks!

  27. Evan Schoenberg Says:

The version checker *does* check against minimum system requirements, or at least is intended to. However, this is the first release in which we’ve used this functionality. When the appcast for the version checker was first updated, the minimum version requirement wasn’t specified properly on the server, so 10.3.9 users were inadvertantly notified. Sorry for the confusion!

  28. Amadeus Says:

Love the updates, although it seems the tabs break visually when UNO is used :(

  29. John Says:

anyone know where i can find an earlier version of adium before this latest update? i have 10.3.9 and this SUCKS.

  30. John Muir Says:

Interesting there are so many Panther users … I know there’s nothing worse than a failed update and their grief is reasonable. It’s just I hardly ever bump into any of them. Still, that’s what the internet’s for.

So, who’s at fault for the lack of OS version check: Adium or Sparkle?

Oh and thanks for the update, it’s all looking good on 10.4.10.

  31. Scott Says:

The .dmg warning is nice, but IMHO, using .dmgs for distribution is a little convoluted.

It would be even more straightforward if you just used a .zip file, c.f. Panic’s Coda. Adium is totally self contained so that works just fine.

  32. Edward Says:

About the right-to-left text in MSN…

    شكرًا جزيرًا

But what was wrong with it before, exactly?

  33. John Says:

ok woops sorry guys i didn’t even realize earlier versions were posted right at the bottom of the adiumx.com homepage. ;)

seems like adium version 1.0.5 still crashed on my 10.3.9 system so i manually went to http://adiumx.cachefly.net/Adium_1.0.4.dmg and downloaded version 1.0.4 and everything is back to normal. :D

  34. andy Says:

A little feedback: I’m running OS X 10.4.10. After downloading and installing Adium manually (rather than using the auto-update feature), Adium crashed when I attempted to run it. The second time it crashed again. The third time it ran and seems to be running fine now.

  35. Anonymous Says:

im using 1.0.5, clicked auto-update and it says that i have the newest version. what gives? do i have to uninstall my previous version and download the new one? thanks
