Just a quick announcement for everyone using Facebook Chat in Adium:

If you’re experiencing problems, we recommend switching to the official XMPP implementation of Facebook Chat due to its increased stability instead of using the Facebook plugin that comes with Adium.

You can find instructions on how to set it up the XMPP implementation on the FacebookChat page of the Adium Wiki. Facebook has also released instructions.

We hope to offer a migration path from the old to the new implementation of Facebook Chat in a future version of Adium.

AOL is aware of the issue and they are looking into it.  If you are experiencing this issue, please be patient.  We will provide an update when we know more.

We are closing in on the release of Adium 1.4 and have released a new beta, b18, today.

Most prominently, this release fixes Twitter support, disables Facebook authorisation requests and refreshes many translations. Adium 1.4b18 also takes libpurple to version 2.6.6 with some selected changes from 2.7.0 fixing Yahoo! Japan login and bringing greatly improved Gadu-Gadu support. It is available via Adium’s integrated Sparkle updating mechanism and at the beta page where you can also find the full list of changes made since b17.

Please test contact management in particular – combined contacts, (re)moving contacts and the like – since substantial parts of the contact lists have been rewritten for Adium 1.4.

Japan recently changed some of their server settings. To be able to connect again in Adium 1.3.10, you need to change the Login Server to the current server IP address.

To obtain that information, load http://cs1.msg.vip.ogk.yahoo.co.jp/capacity and look after the text “CS_IP_ADDRESS=“. The numbers and dots after that are what you should put in the Login Server field, without the preceding text.

Adium 1.3.10 is now available. This release is Facebook-oriented and forcibly disables the Facebook CAPTCHA, and fixes some issues with messages from newer Facebook users.

We regret having to release two point releases in such quick succession, sorry for any inconvenience. Hopefully any remaining Facebook issues facing 1.3 users are now fixed in this release.

This release contains the connection fixes for Facebook chat, as well as a small fix for Snow Leopard users to fix the events list. There’s more Snow Leopard fixes on the upcoming 1.4 beta release which we felt were too broad of changes to include in the 1.3.8 release, sorry. An updated beta for 1.4 with the Facebook fix will be coming shortly through the usual channels. Enjoy!

NB: If you’re getting the CAPTCHA popup, disconnect and wait 10 minutes before you try to connect again. CAPTCHA itself isn’t working, but the message just means to calm down trying to connect.

The author of our Facebook plugin is working on a fix. We’ll keep you posted on any new releases that fix it.

In the meantime, feel free to send Facebook some feedback about wanting an official (as in, we don’t mimic the web browser) Facebook chat protocol. If they implement something that isn’t subject to breaking, we’d be able to avoid problems such as this.

Adium 1.4b10 is also now available containing the above fixes, as well as a few other Snow Leopard fixes (such as XMPP SSL connections not working in certain cases, support for remembering to use “substitutions”), QQ client version support, a fix for logs being written incorrectly, and a bunch of other fixes.

1.3.6 also features an updated version of the Facebook chat plugin, fixing a number of issues, which were present in Adium 1.3.5 including unwanted email notifications, dropped messages and missing contact icons.  We therefore strongly recommend you update!

Meanwhile, work continues on Adium 1.4, the next major release, with tons of progress so far.  You can join Adium 1.4 beta testing by enabling ‘Update to beta versions when available’ in your current version of Adium or by visiting the beta page.
