SoC: Snapping Groups

This is Andre Cohen, one of the SoC students working on Adium. I have this summer been extending the contact list’s functionality to allow groups to be detachable. As it has been seen here a lot of progress has been made. Groups can easily be detached, moved and organized in which ever way one prefers. As of two weeks ago the project became stable enough for everyday use.

Currently I have been working on smoothing out the experience. This includes:

  • Adding/perfecting options in the view and window menu
  • Making sure it is clear to the user when a groups are attached to each other or if they simply are next to each other
  • Fixing or perhaps revising the way contact lists hide on the edge of the screen (thus fixing a currently very interesting bug)

This project has been going very well. Having started a bit early on the project it is allowing me to take more time to make sure everything functions smoothly. More updates to come!

PS: Since this project is entirely focused on user interaction I look forward to hearing about concerns and/or suggestions about this project.

  1. How about mass message for contacts in the same groups? (group message)

this feature will be useful, I think

  2. I’m really glad that the Adium blog is much more active these days. I hope it will stay this way.

As a response to hanindyo’s comment, I personally hate mass messaging in Yahoo and that is why I don’t keep Yahoo! Messenger open and I ignore(block) every person that sends a mass.

If you do introduce this feature in any version, make sure there is a way to identify a mass message and be able to block such messages from being received if the users wants to.

  3. @Lucy: Yes I understand your concern about this future mass message will be used to SPAM people. But this may be use for good deed too… People at the same office/team, to be use by groups of stock traders to synchronize their action in buying/selling and many more…

And I agree with you, I think this feature must have a different pre-stamp before the message, so it can be identified as a mass message.

  4. I have been using Adium for years and never knew this feature existed. Upon a quick search “multiple columns adium” I found this blog post. Thanks for the great feature Andre!

  5. Hi, speacking about mass message i think that they’ll be very usefull. I need it in certain circumstance and if you add this feature it’ll be awesome…
