ICQ “client version too old” error

Many of you are reporting an error message that started appearing today:

The client version you are using is too old.
Please upgrade at http://pidgin.im/

First, about that website address: Adium uses libpurple, which is the core library from Pidgin. That’s why Pidgin’s address is in the message. We need to swap out that address for Adium’s address.

As for the rest of the error: It appears that, starting today, AOL’s servers now require ICQ 6 or later. Libpurple, in every recent version of Adium, promises to behave like ICQ 5. So, now, AOL’s server responds with “ICQ 5, you say? You’re too old!” Libpurple receives this and passes it on to Adium, which displays it to you.

Once the Pidgin team (they maintain libpurple, remember) fixes this problem, we’ll bring the fix into Adium, and we’ll get it out to you in a new release as soon as we can.

    Adium is so far the best program for using ICQ MSN and so on, on a Mac.

    Hi,

    according to this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=846279&page=3 there seems to be a working patch, which can be found here: http://nosnilmot.com/pidgin/pidgin-2.4.2-icq.patch

    Could work with adium as well, i think. If someone builds a patched version of the libpurple, please share them with us :-)

    Thanks for sharing (cause sharing is caring;-) ) this information. And for your effort. As a side note: Proteus stil works fine, although I’ll switch ASAP back to the duck when this issue is fixed.

    i’m using icq2go for now and it really burns my eyes just looking at it (though i gotta admit, they improved it a loot lately). i just can’t be bothered to install another app for the meantime… hoping for a fast fix!

    i just set up ichat with chax to access icq and it works quite well. it’s not adium though ;)

    thanks for posting, i was about to report it cuz i wondered why nobody else seemed to have done that. sad to hear its kinda not on your end so we’re all just waiting…. anyway not going to give up on adium because of this pretty sure ull sort it out! keep up the great work!

    P.S.: I don’t think that yours PowerPC G3 (for example) compiling this before late
    morning, while developers can do that more fast ;)

    The patch that Shetty linked is only useful if you’re going to rebuild Libpurple from source. Please don’t do that. Pidgin’s server is a smoking crater right now, because of hundreds of thousands of Adium and Pidgin users stampeding to it on orders from the error message. You checking out the Libpurple source will not help, and will make a real fix take longer.

    So please leave the patch and the Libpurple source code alone. It will help the real fix arrive that much faster.

    Talked to someone uses an old version of adium and he doesn’t have any problems so I checked out my old Adium Versions 0.89 and 1.0.5 and both work fine with ICQ.. ;-) So maybe a solution to downgrade adium until a new adium version is out…
    Ps.: when I updated 1.0.5 to 1.1.4 i got back the ICQ error,,

    For those of you who hate icq2go I would recommend meebo, multimessaging client online. You can find it on http://www.meebo.org and its free.
    To the server admins over at ICQ who did this: You suck! How dare can you do this to us!? They sure know that there is freeware how tries to use the (not open) protocol. Shame on you! ;-)

    Я полагаю, что время блога (которое проставляется в комментариях) соответствует времени разрабов и тогда у них сейчас 9 вечера и они уже бросили заниматься чем либо и расползлись по семьям. Думаю, в следующие 10 часов ничего интересного ожидать не приходится.

    Over here in Germany, there is only ICQ to use. Well, I’d like to use Jabber, but no one else does.

    I tried to convince my friends to use Jabber (because of encrypted connections). But that failed as well as convincing them to use encrypted e-mail (PGP, S/MIME). They do not know that stuff (encryption, as well as other IM services like Jabber, AIM, …) and they do not want that stuff, they are content with unencrypted e-mails and chats like ICQ; or one might say they are ignorant.

    So, PMM, and others: What would you recommend instead of using ICQ? How would you convince all of your contacts to register to another (to them unknown) IM service?

    i love to have just little pictures of my friends on the one side of my desktop. not such a big fat grey box with names and pictures and status and and and. adium is so much more aesthetic than this big concrete thing of icq or ichat or whatever.
